Spring Conference 2011 Springfield

Shannon Engelbrecht

District 6

Past Ideas from Spring Conference in KC, 2010

I got some great ideas from other MAEA members while at the Spring Conference.

  1. Professional development funding for arts education can sometimes be a tough sell to your administrators and Professional Development Committees.  Have you thought about coming back from a conference and making a presentation to your PDC, your administration and/or your board?  Simply ask your PDC for a time to present your accomplishments while attending a conference.  Clarify how you meet your CSIP, SIP or personal goals.
  2. Nominate your administrator for an appreciation award through MAEA.  All the information is on the web site.  www.maea.net   It means so much to people when they are recognized for actions that have a big impact on your life.  Take the time to let them know the positive impact they have on you and on arts education.  When they shine, you shine.
  3. With full schedules, how can we take more time to promote arts education?  Just being a member is the most important step.  I see our arts advocacy chair put in her time because she is passionate about arts advocacy for all of us.  By being a member, you can stay educated on current news without building more time into your day.  You will see something that does fit, that you will want to take time for, and that you know what to do.  Make sure you are receiving artbytes news.  If you don’t, please go to www.maea.net ,scroll to thebottom of the page and get art bytes.

Accomplishments

District 6 has a new leader!  Congratulations to Connie Shoemaker our new President Elect.  She is a high school art teacher in Rolla, MO.  Connie has been an outstanding YAM organizer and arts advocacy chair.  Just that one statement oversimplifies the amount of time and effort Connie devotes to MAEA.  I have seen her at school long after the sun has gone down working diligently and with a smile on her face.  District 6 is very proud of you!

Secondary Art Teacher of the Year is…me, Shannon Engelbrecht!  I am honored and most of all I am having a great time.  I have a great friend, confidant, and motivator in my friend, Connie Shoemaker.  She is the person that has encouraged me the most and made all of this possible.  I would not have tried to be a district representative without her encouragement and it turns out to be a blast.  I hope to be the person who encourages district 6 members to take part and enjoy MAEA.

Elementary Art Teacher of the Year is…Diana Mahoney!

It is my goal to let others know about the star quality of d6 members.  I plan to encourage our members to share their accomplishments through MAEA magazine, edublog and event emails.

YAM

The new YAM co-chairs are Lori Bockting and Diana Mahoney!  Lot’s of work involved in this commitment, but it is appreciated by many.  Thank you D6 members for your dedication.

Yam participation is very impressive.  Many teachers, students and their families continue to visit our state capitol for the fine arts day events.  I know many teachers visit our elected officials, tour the Capitol, and participate in the honorable ceremony in the rotunda.  What an accomplishment to elevate your students in such a regal setting and to promote arts education to the people who impact education.
